While soooo many people visit New England to see the fall foliage, the area in the US is just as beautiful in the summertime! And bonus: way less traffic and crowds. Here’s an awesome New England summer road trip itinerary I think you’ll love.

While fall in New England is popular, it’s also bumper-to-bumper traffic on the most beautiful scenic drives, and that just doesn’t sound awesome to me. So, my family did a summer road trip in our RV and it was seriously so amazing!
With charming coastal towns, mountain landscapes, and historic cities, all within a relatively short distance, what more can you ask for in a fun road trip?

Anyway, I’ve mapped out a New England road trip itinerary that flows seamlessly from city to coast to mountains and back again. It’s ideal for first-time visitors who want to experience the very best of the region during peak summer season.

Unforgettable summer New England road trip itinerary

I recommend a minimum of 10 days for this road trip, just because there’s so much to see and do in New England. If you have 7 you can make it work, but the longer the better!
Let’s get to it!
Stop 1: Boston, Massachusetts

Start your New England road trip itinerary here
Recommended time: 2 days
Boston is the perfect place to kick off your summer New England road trip. It probably has the most flight options versus starting in another spot of New England… unless you live in the area, of course!
Boston is walkable, packed with history, and has a fun energy to it.
One of my favorite things to do here is a Freedom Trail walking tour. It takes you past historic landmarks like Paul Revere’s House and the Old North Church, giving you a feel for the city’s deep roots without ever feeling like a boring history lesson.
You can also spend time exploring Beacon Hill, which feels straight out of a movie with its brick sidewalks and adorable charming brownstones.
Summer is an especially great time to visit Boston. Outdoor patios are buzzing, harbor cruises are in full swing, and the weather is ideal for walking everywhere. Grab fresh seafood along the waterfront or catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, it’s one of those classic summer experiences you won’t forget!
Stop 2: Newport, Rhode Island (one of my favorite coastal spots on this New England summer road trip!)

Drive time from Boston: ~1.5 hours
Recommended time: 1–2 days
Let’s head south to Rhode Island! Newport is where your New England summer road trip really starts to feel coastal and relaxed. This seaside town is known for its huge mansions, ocean views and nautical vibe.
The Cliff Walk in Newport is a must-do. It combines dramatic ocean scenery with views of some of the most impressive mansions in the country. Touring The Breakers or Marble House gives you a glimpse into the lives of America’s wealthiest families during the Gilded Age.
Summer is peak season in Newport for a reason. The weather is perfect for sailing, beach days and waterfront dining at Bowen’s Wharf. Whether you’re grabbing lobster rolls – seriously, a must try! – or watching boats drift through the harbor, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile.

Stop 3: New Haven, Connecticut

Drive time from Newport: ~2 hours
Recommended time: Half day to 1 day
New Haven might not be the first place that comes to mind for a New England road trip itinerary, but it’s absolutely worth the stop, especially if you love good food!
This city is home to Yale University, so you’ll find beautiful architecture, museums and a college town atmosphere. Walking around campus feels is fun (especially with kids), with plenty of shaded paths and green spaces.
But I’ll be honest about our time in New Haven: the real highlight is the pizza. 😆 New Haven-style pizza (locally called “apizza”) is famous for a reason. Spots like Frank Pepe and Sally’s are legendary, and grabbing a slice here is a must on your summer New England road trip.
Summer brings outdoor dining, local events, and a relaxed vibe that makes it an easy and enjoyable stop before heading north.
Stop 4: Stowe, Vermont

Drive time from New Haven: ~4 hours
Recommended time: 2 days
Stowe is where your New England summer road trip shifts from coastal charm to mountain beauty. This Vermont town is known for its scenic landscapes, outdoor activities and classic small-town feel.
In the summer, Stowe has such a cute downtown area, we loved walking the shops! It’s also a dream for hiking, biking and soaking in mountain views.
You can take the gondola up Mount Mansfield for panoramic scenery or explore the Stowe Recreation Path, which winds through fields, forests and covered bridges.
And if you have the time, make sure to schedule a Ben & Jerry’s factory tour in nearby Waterbury. My kids loved seeing the ice cream process and taste testing!
What makes the Stowe area especially great in summer is how lush and green everything is! It’s less crowded than fall foliage season, but just as beautiful. Plus, you’ll find local breweries, farm-to-table restaurants and cozy spots that make it easy to unwind after a day outside.
Stop 5: Lincoln and Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire

Drive time from Stowe: ~2 hours
Recommended time: 1-2 days
This part of your New England road trip itinerary is all about the scenery. The White Mountains in New Hampshire near Lincoln and Franconia Notch State Park, is one of the most scenic areas in New England! It’s super popular in the fall, but also suuuuper busy then.
Be sure to make time to visit Franconia Notch State Park and drive the Kancamagus Scenic Byway in this area.
You can take adventures like walking through narrow granite walls and waterfalls, or hiking up to Artist’s Bluff for one of the best views in New Hampshire!
Summer is ideal here because the trails are fully accessible, waterfalls are flowing, and the weather is perfect for exploring. It’s one of those places where you’ll want to pull over constantly just to take it all in.
Of the stops we made on our New England summer road trip, my family would absolutely love to return to this area!
Stop 6: Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine (another favorite on this New England road trip itinerary)

Drive time from Franconia Notch: ~4.5 hours
Recommended time: 2–5 days
This is often the highlight of any New England road trip (regardless of season), and for good reason. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park offer some of the most stunning coastal scenery in the country!
In Acadia, you can drive the Park Loop Road, hike along ocean cliffs, and watch the sunrise (or less popular, sunset) from Cadillac Mountaint. Jordan Pond, Sand Beach and Thunder Hole are all must-see stops.
Bar Harbor itself is charming and the quintessential Maine town, with shops, restaurants and fresh seafood galore. Summer is the best time to visit because everything is open, the weather is warm, and the coastal views are at their absolute peak.
You could literally spend a week just exploring the park, so plan accordingly!

Stop 7: Portland, Maine

Drive time from Bar Harbor: ~3 hours
Recommended time: 1–2 days
Portland is one of the coolest cities on this New England road trip itinerary! It has a creative, slightly edgy vibe mixed with coastal charm.
The Old Port district is adorable… it’s full of cobblestone streets, boutique shops and incredible restaurants. This city is known for its food scene, so plan to eat well! You’ll absolutely want to try fresh lobster rolls, oysters and some of the best donuts you’ll ever try.
Definitely include a trip to one of the most famous lighthouses in the country, Portland Head Light! Such a fun stop on this summer New England road trip itinerary.
Stop 8: Salem, Massachusetts

Drive time from Portland: ~2 hours
Recommended time: 1 day
End your Summer New England road trip in Salem, a town that’s famous for its history. It’s also home to cute shops, waterfront views and quirky energy that you’ll only find in Salem!
My family loved this walking tour of Salem, where we learned all about the history of the Salem Witch Trials. Although part of it was difficult to hear, it really puts the commercialism of Halloween in perspective!
Summer is actually a great time to visit because it’s lively without the overwhelming crowds (literally millions!) in October. Things are more relaxed in the summertime.
From here, head back to Boston to fly out (or home if you live near New England and are driving!)
New England summer road trip – that’s a wrap!

Whew! Can you even believe this?! There’s seriously so much to see in the area of the US! While you could spend a week or more in each state in New England, I think this itinerary is sort of the best of the best of each state.
From charming cities to the lush mountains and beautiful coastlines, this is such a bucket list road trip. Pack your sunblock, layers and get ready for an epic vacation!
